Buleleng’s “Gangsing” Competition

Bulelengs Gangsing CompetitionBuyan Lake as the venue of Lake Buyan Festival (LBF) 2014 is also became the place for “gangsing” competition. The traditional game is usually played by coffee farmers in the area. The visitors of the event are also very excited in watching the competition.

The arena use in “gangsing” competition is 10 x 10 meter in measurement and inside there is also another small arena with the size of 4 x 4 meters. Few men using traditional Balinese clothes are preparing the “gangsing” which is a wooden round object resemble the moon. Every ”gangsing” has the diameter of 15 cm and weight in 1,5 kilograms.

The judging of the competition based on two things. The first is to hit the “gangsing” opponent but he miss then it will be based on the longest spin done by the “gangsing”. During the (LBF) 2014, the first participant of the “gangsing” competition is the team from Munduk Village which faces Gobleg Village.

The art of “gangsing” is known since a long time ago but no one knows exactly when. The game is played in several villages such as Munduk, Umejero, Gesing, Gobleg, Kayuputih, and Bengkel Village.

The game is developing from time to time. Long time ago, the people only used wood from lime tree but know just about any kind of wood can be made as “gangsing”. Jro Putu Ardana, one of the participant said that to make a “gangsing”, it is usually takes three days and around 250.000 rupiah. “The maximum diameter of gangsing is 16 cm and the weight is 1.6 kilograms,” he added.

Each village usually has different kind of “gangsing” and rules to play. “In Pupuan District, we usually use small kind of gangsing, 5 cm ion diameter but in Catur Desa Adat Dalem Tamblingan, we use a larger one,” said Jro Ardana. He added that he already went to Batam, Tanjung Pinang and other places throughout Indonesia to play in “gangsing” competition.  (BTN/015)
