Are you a reliable surfer? Try to get the challenge of the rigorous waves of Medewi Beach. The beach located in Pekutatan subdistrict, Jembrana, about 70 km from Denpasar City is one of the favorite tourist beaches. Aside from being a comfortable place to relax, the beach is also a nice playground to get a challenge for surfing sports.
Medewi Beach is slightly different from the other beaches in Bali. With a sloping position, it is more decorated with the overlay of stones than sand. The waves are huge and liked best by surfers wishing to try out their ability on the sea. You do not have to worry if you want to surf and enjoy the sunset for a long time because hotels and restaurants have been available nearby.
Several surfers have tried the ferociousness of coastal waves offered by Medewi Beach. They are mostly from Australia, Holland and Japan. However, the number of their arrival is uncertain. On holidays such as from January to March, it is more exploited by tourists from Japan, while June through August it draws tourists from Australian.
Nevertheless, many tourists come concurrently, especially in May because the waves on the beach are great for surfing. “There are also beginner surfers coming to practice. By all means, during the holiday season, Medewi Beach is visited by many local tourists,” said one of the local traders, Ni Luh Sri.
Medewi Beach is indeed not widely known. However, the beach is frequently used to hold a surfing event. For example, the Asian Surfing Championship was held last Sunday (May 26). At that time, 70 participants from various countries in Asia were involved. The competition was divided into two categories, namely those of 13 to 14 years old were classified into grommet and 15 to 16 years old into junior category.
Even, this international event is held for three times a year. In the past, this event was held on Kuta and Sanur Beach. “The waves on Medewi Beach are not far different from those on Kuta Beach. This event serves as a promotion for the tourist area in West Bali,” said Alex, committee chairman of the surfing contest.
Alex said the event aimed to give the opportunities to surfing hobbyists and lovers. “Therefore, in this competition boys and girls are allowed to participate. In this event they can train the mental and self-confidence,” he said. (BTN/ocha)
