Klungkung,
Ancient Kingdoms
Galiran
Market, The Central
Traditional Market for Eastern Bali
Galiran
Market, Klungkung is known as the central
market of Eastern Bali, because of its
agricultural commodities from Karangasem,
Bangli and Gianyar are mostly sold here.
Prior to 1974, Klungkung traditional market
situated in the heart of Semarapura city,
is the heritage of the Dutch administration
period. But, in keeping with the development
of commercial activities, the market was
moved to Galiran Village, 2 hours drive
to the south.
The
market in the center of the city was renovated
to a three-floored market building, offering
handicraft products, artwork, traditional
fabrics and so forth considering this market
is very close to the tourist attraction
of Kertha Gosa. Here, can be found many
vendors who sell their goods in the same
way as Galiran Market. However, the most
number of transactions are performed at
Galiran Market as the leading market. The
most crowded market day falls every three
days on pasah (a three-day week based on
Balinese almanac).
25 October 1994, the then Klungkung Regent,
Ida Bagus Oka, extended the market area
to 3 hectares. Transaction activities at
the market take place round the clock. On
Hindu holidays like Galungan, activities
at the market are always crowded.
On entering, visitors to Galiran Market
will find a parking area for cars and motorbikes.
Its located at the northern and eastern
part of the market. The market opens at
04:00 to 18:00 and at 6.00pm, the entrance
gate will be locked and all vendors close
their outlets. While, outside the market,
transaction activities still continue 24
hours a day.
Galiran Market consists of 14 building blocks
each selling different goods. Block A, B
and C is focused on wholesale consumer goods.
This block sells wholesale agricultural
products like vegetables, fresh fruit and
others. Block D and E are specialized to
sell agricultural products, block F for
vegetables. Food and beverages and assorted
fruits are available at block G and H. While,
block J and I sell various cattle and pottery
handicrafts whilst baskets and salt can
be found at block K. Block L and M sell
meat and sugar, and block N for cakes and
plaits.
